Dave Pounder

(THE LINK FOR THE LIVE PODCAST INTERVIEW CAN BE FOUND AT THE END OF THIS ARTICLE)

If there is a stereotype that you would expect a porn star to fit, Dave Pounder doesn’t fit it.  He lives in a studio apartment, drives a Honda Civic and called into our show on a cheap cell phone that he admitted doesn’t have the best coverage.  Dave admits to being cheap and living well below his means, saving all his money.  I just had to ask him if he wasn’t using his money to impress the ladies, if he was doing it by telling them he was in porn.

After laughing he answered, “If you tell them that, they run.  I usually tell them I am a media consultant.”

Dave has made no secret that if he met the right woman he would give up the porn business.  In fact, that is his goal over the next few years, to get out of the business.  He is currently working on a book sharing his philosophy and experiences from the last ten years of his life as well as a documentary focusing on the long-term affect of porn careers on those leaving the business.

Dave Pounder – From MBA to Adult Entertainment

Beyond his documentary and book what does Dave plan on doing when he leaves the world of adult entertainment?  He plans on doing some marketing, finding the woman of his dreams and trying to lead as normal of a life as possible.  One thing  he won’t be doing is returning to the corporate world.

Dave Pounder is proof that not everyone that enters the world of adult entertainment comes from a questionable background.  He grew up the quintessential boy next door, attended Detroit Catholic Central High School, went on to get a Bachelors degree in Finance from Michigan State University and later attended Arizona State University where he earned a Masters degree in Information Management from the College of Business.

After graduation he took a job with WFS Financial, a subsidiary of Wachovia Bank.  It was while working here he decided that working in the cooperate world was not for him.  Not everyone can conform to the standards set by the business world of wearing slacks and a dress suit to work every day and working 8 to 4 or 9 to 5 five days a week while sitting at the same desk in the same cube.  Dave Pounder is one of those people.  He would much rather wear shorts and sandals, something I gave him good natured ribbing about because it was something he made a big deal about in his movie Hard at Work, and be free to work on his own schedule.  Having saved up most of his money, he decided to quit his job and give acting a try.

After going to one casting call to the next and rarely getting called back, he found himself at a swingers club talking to someone who knew a guy who knew a guy who could get him into the porn business if he were interested.  That someone was Jim Powers, and as they say, the rest is history.  Today Dave lives a stress free life producing, directing and acting in adult films, and he gets to wear those shorts and sandals to work every day.  If everyone else could make the same claim about their life and job the world would be a much happier place to live in.

Dave Pounders Acceptance into Mainstream Entertainment

Another of Dave’s accomplishments is that he has made a small corner for himself in the world of mainstream entertainment.  He is a member of both the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists and has appeared in a number of TV shows such as Jimmy Kimmel Live, Blind Date, The Weakest Link and 5th Wheel.     He doesn’t shy away from admitting to doing porn.

Where some porn stars, when looking for mainstream work, choose to work under another name to prevent harassment by their co-stars, or even the worst case scenario of someone refusing to work with them, Dave uses the stage name that he picked for himself, Dave Pounder.  He’s not shy about his career choice and stands behind it, even when it comes to doing mainstream work.  If someone wants to cast him as the pornographer that gets busted, he’s all for it.  He’s not going to pretend he’s never been in the industry.

Dave Pounder - Advocate for Adult Industry Regulation

There may seem to be something ironic on the surface about a porn star advocating for federal regulation of the adult entertainment until you look at the some of the statistics.  Between January 2003 and March 2005 there were 1,153 reported STD cases in the industry among 976 performers.  722 of those were for Chlamydia, and 355 were gonorrhea.  What it comes down to Dave Pounder is not only his health, but the health of other people in the business.

With the number of sexual partners and most studios having a condoms optional policy the conditions are optimal for the spread of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases.  All testing done in the industry through AIM, The Adult Industry Medical Health Care Foundation, and otherwise is not mandatory.  Some studios may require a monthly health screen, while others won’t.

Federal legislation mandating condom use and expanded health screenings covering the full range of STDs would go a long way to ensuring the viability of the industry.  In fact, Dave Pounder is such a propionate of safe sex and promoting awareness that he has a PSA about STDs and AIM at the beginning of his movies.

Dave Pounder Interview With Adultmaven

Dave Pounder joined Adultmaven reviewers Diamond Couture and Georga for an interview to discuss these things and many others recently on NowLive.  Dave talks about why his films are 100% anal free, the niche market of porn, how he has gone about promoting himself outside of the adult entertainment world and how he goes about trying to find a girl and have a normal relationship despite his career choice.  Despite the technical difficulties at the beginning of the podcast, we had a wonderful time talking to Dave Pounder and would like to thank him once again for his time.  Hopefully everyone will enjoy listening to the podcast as much as Adultmaven enjoyed putting it together.  Without further ado
