He’s led a very interesting life and wasn’t what we were expecting for an AVN award winning actor.

If there was ever a Cinderella like story to come out of porn it would belong to Alan Stafford. Hardly a rags to riches story, but it comes as close as you are going to get in real life. Prior to a career in the adult industry, Alan had a problem with meth, spent time in rehab as well as jail. He isn’t shy about talking about a rap sheet that includes being under the influence of an illegal substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, ID theft, credit card fraud, assault with a deadly weapon, burglary and vehicle theft. He openly admitted that his addiction was out of control to the point he was homeless and sleeping behind liquor stores.

It was while he was in prison that he decided to try and make his way in porn, thinking it was something that he was only going to be able to do on the weekends. Part of his reasoning for doing porn was his age, he had nothing going for him at the time and he wasn’t getting any younger and the other part was he didn’t want to have any regrets, so he figured he might as well give it a shot. He sent out pictures to the studios not knowing how to go about getting into porn before he came across an add in Xbiz for L.A. Direct. This year he received the AVN for Best Male Newcomer and has also graced the pages of Playgirl magazine on two different occasions, once as the centerfold.

There are always stories going around about how many people in the adult industry are addicted to drugs, but Alan told us something opposite. “Those who are successful in their careers don’t do drugs” and that in order to do his scenes he has to stay clean and sober.

Maybe it’s the stigma that goes with porn, but when you start to wonder what porn stars do when they aren’t in front of the camera it’s hard to imagine what their life is like. It’s easy to imagine a deviant life full of sex filled parties, especially from someone with a sordid past. That isn’t the case and it’s not like people imagine. Alan has a thing for independent and foreign films and told us about The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, the movie adaptation of the French memoir of Jean-Dominique Bauby, Elle magazine editor-in-chief. He suffered a heart attack and lapsed into a coma. Upon waking he was paralyzed except for some movement in his head and his left eye and suffered from Locked-In syndrome. The entire memoir was dictated by eye blinks. He is also a fan of classic type literature such as Herman Hef and Thomas Mann and Juxtapose Art.

Alan shared these things with us as well as many other things, in fact, he was surprised that we didn’t get “down and dirty” with him. We aren’t sure what that meant, and when we asked him, he wasn’t sure either. It wasn’t like we didn’t talk to him about what it was like trying to keep an erection under less than desirable conditions and being able to “pop” on command. We even talked to him about what it was like trying to have a relationship with someone while being in porn.
