Sophia Illustrated

I think this is the first movie that I have watched that has a plot without having a plot.  How is that possible you ask?  Sophia Illustrated takes the idea of a sex magazine and shows what it would be if we watched magazines rather than read them.  Sophia Rossi "reads" each of her advice columns as she is answering the questions from those that write in.  The idea allowed Jim Enright the ability to fit in all the standard sexual situations (girl/girl, three-way) without much struggling to figure out how to write them into a story line.

As the pages turn in the magazine you can see full page adverts for other Sophia Rossi movies taken straight from AVN and select pictures come to life.  As Sophia talks about men's erogenous zones Jack Lawerence and (I believe) Brook Haven* "demonstrate" what she is talking about.

Has your sex life become boring?  You can spice it up by learning how to do a strip tease for your man.  Stripper poles can be bought over the Internet...Sophia is trying to initiate sex with Tommy Gunn and he's not interested.  (Tommy Gunn, nominated for AVN Actor of the Year, not interested in sex??  How is that possible??)  We comes around once Sophia puts on some skimpy clothes and does a strip tease for him.

Jassie writes to Sophia that she has been in a relationship for a year with her boyfriend, Alex Gonz, and she trusts him, but he's wanting a threesome and she doesn't know what to do about that.  Sophia has advise for her and the two of them meet Faith Leon at a strip club and take her home.

Riley Chase's boyfriend, Derrick Pierce, is more interested in watching sports on TV and Sophia has advise for how to get his attention where there are other balls being played with.  Riley comes downstairs wearing fuck me fetish boots and the new underwear she just bought at the mall.  Derrick throws his game buddy out of the house and quickly forgets about the game.

Finally, Bebe Minx, Sophia's assistant, is writing Sophia about her attraction to girls, or rather on girl in specific.  Sophia gives her advice on how to approach the girl only to find out that it's herself.

Eric Masterson was billed as being in the movie but you only see about a minute of footage with him at the very end as Sophia is winding up this latest issue of Sophia Illustrated.  He's rubbing her shoulders.  I wasn't aware that doing a brief cameo got your name on the cover of a DVD case.  Sometimes (okay, a lot of the time) I don't understand the hows and whys of why Club Jenna does the things it does.

The idea of a magazine come to life was a different approach to things.  Porn is pretty formulamatic so I always welcome new ideas on how to present it.  (Different doesn't always cut it, especially where Club Jenna is concerned.  I have found their definition of "different" often involves weird editing that only looks good if you are high on hallucinogenics.  See Brea's Mirror Image.)  I think Jim Enright could do a number of movies like this before it got old.  What's even better is that the magazine Sophia Illustrated is written as sex advice for women.  It's not to often that the women who watch porn are recognized directly.  I found that pretty cool.  Sophia Illustrated is one of the few movies (so far) from Club Jenna that I recommend checking out.
